Introduction
Palm oil is a tropical edible vegetable oil that accounts for approximately 35% of the world’s
vegetable oil production. It is derived from the pulp of the palm fruit (crude palm oil) and the
palm kernel (palm kernel oil), each with distinct characteristics, quality, and industrial
applications. Oil palm trees thrive in tropical regions with abundant rainfall, requiring a
minimum of 325 liters per day per tree
Historically, Indonesia and Malaysia have dominated the palm oil production industry,
accounting for 84% of global output over the past four decades. However, new players are
emerging, including Thailand, Colombia, and Nigeria, which collectively account for 7% of the
market share. China and India are the largest importers of palm oil, with 16% and 21% of the
global import market, respectively, followed by the European Union. Major industrial
consumers include Nestle and Unilever.
